WAC Celebrates the First of May
2003
HUNDREDS
from The Workers Advice Center (WAC)
gathered in Haifa this year to celebrate the First of May. On view were 46
group pictures taken on the building sites, showing 600 Arab construction
workers who have so far gained jobs through WAC. This is a tenfold
increase from May of last year, when WAC’s campaign, “A Job to Win,” was
four months old.
The
evening was full of fun and solidarity. It featured short speeches by WAC
National Coordinator Assaf Adiv, construction worker Nassim Athamneh, and
Yacov Ben Efrat, General Secretary of the ODA. The workers put on most of
the performances, including much rousing music and a skit by their new
Theatre Group. Actors of the Veto Theatre did an Arrabal play (see p. 12)
and Gadi Eyal sang songs of protest. Asma Agbarieh, Coordinator for East
Jerusalem, served as moderator. To close the event, WAC presented
certificates and prizes to outstanding workers.
