From Challenge # 75  September-October 2002

WAC Job Placements Increase

By the start of September 2002, WAC has found jobs in Solel Boneh, a construction firm, for 225 workers. That represents an increase of 75 within a month. These included 20 workers from East Jerusalem. Their employment is a result of our efforts over the last two years in helping Jerusalem's jobless get their rights. We also placed new teams from Umm Al-Fahm and Sakhnin, both of which have large groups of unemployed construction workers. The employment of two new work teams from these towns, twenty people in all, may open the way for thousands more.

WAC sees an enormous potential for putting workers back on the job. After years during which personnel companies imported cheap foreign labor, there is still a lack of trust between local workers and the contractors. The restoration of workers' confidence in an orderly job-market, ready to employ on a long-term basis and at a fair wage, is an essential condition for normal economic life.
